Carolena and Makala Take Art Basel Miami 2019

Miami Beach is known for it's over-the-top parties, beach-goers, nightlife, hot bodies & even hotter sun, and a certain aura of confidence that consumes you when you arrive. It has become a coveted spot for both tourists and those looking for a place to call home, and is still growing in population today. It is not only one of the most popular cities in the United States, but arguably the "Mecca" for nightlife & street art in the western hemisphere.

Beginning in the 1970s in Switzerland
[2], Art Basel has since extended its global reach, and hosts festivals in cities around the world, including Miami Beach. For one week in December, this international event draws all the focus to the artists who make Miami the aesthetic conglomerate of edgy and rebellious bad-assery that it is, inviting the global art community to come and partake in the artistic appreciation.

We are proud to announce that two of our Featured Artists are showcasing their work as part of this year's festivities, while simultaneously representing our organization amongst a community of global artists and patrons.

Carolena's rich vocal tones and inspirational insight resonate deeply with us. Her performances are consistently impressive, and she always manages to share her deepest and most personal thoughts and feelings in a way that appears effortless and fearless. Her lyrics deliver empowering messages, from navigating the trials of love and self-discovery, to simply loving yourself and being unapologetically authentic. We are ecstatic to see what kind of set Carolena will deliver, as her discography and past live performances include everything from broken-down, acoustic, lyrical, emotional pieces, to fun, upbeat, more heavily-produced EDM beats that leave the listener eager to get up and dance (as one might guess a Miami-based artist would embrace).
Makala is an artist from France, based in Paris. A global artist who knows no boundaries, her art is not restricted to any one medium. Initially gaining interest by our curators with her unique and elegant embroidery work, Makala has proven to be a versatile creative, showing off pieces made with paints, watercolor, and has even shown an appreciation for pottery and sculpting. Makala continues to exceed our expectations, and her mission for international recognition is a success as this global festival acts as a temporary home for her recent piece titled "Bluesquare".

Miami functions as a global hub for international finance, manufacturing, trade, and tourism. Flights, ocean voyages, and road trips all lead there. The city's highway network includes connections to many major freeways, including I-95 and Florida's Turnpike, while the Port of Miami is a global leader in international imports, exports, and cruise ship departures. Miami International Airport (MIA) handles travelers and cargo traveling to and from mostly Latin American and Caribbean countries [1], and is a major checkpoint for flight connections and national security.

It is no surprise that Art Basel chose Miami Beach as the desired spot for hosting the western leg of their festival, as Miami is known for boasting an array of cultural festivals and events, including:
  • Art Deco Weekend
  • Ultra Music Festival
  • Miami Music Week
  • Miami/Coral Gables Food & Wine Festival
  • International Conference on Arts, Education, and Business
  • International Conference on Arts and Humanities
