Celebrating The Life And Art Of Bassmi Ibrahim And The Inspirations That Keep Us Going

Published January 21st, 2020

For some, creativity is a tool of expression, a way to process emotions, and a channel for us to convey our story in a way that others can participate in. It allows us to be who we are, in the rawest form. It is the driving force behind pure imagination, social movements, and even the modern business world.

Consumable content has become such a major part of our society that sometimes, as creators, we might find ourselves under immense pressure to create projects capable of succeeding in the mainstream. It can be difficult to find a balance between authenticity and mass appeal. Often the media that garners immense attention and virility is coming from artists who have already sacrificed self-expression, or projects that involve massive teams of creators. Meanwhile, independent artists are expected to tackle numerous roles and may have to dedicate more time to a single project in order to deliver a final product of the same caliber. Marketing tactics and a focus on profit often trump artistic vision and story-telling, leaving the up-and-coming artist at a crossroads.

Sometimes the desire for success can be so overwhelming that it leaves us feeling drained, scattered, or without much focus or energy left to continue creating in a way that allows us to remain true to ourselves. (You know, that crippling anxiety that accompanies a high level of ambition.) It is easy to let our thoughts snowball, leading us away from our true selves, or leaving us stuck in a creative roadblock. Despite this, there are methods to rein in your thoughts, focus your energy, and redirect your motivation towards what you want to manifest for yourself.
Many recognize meditation as a powerful method of mental discipline, spiritual healing, and grounding oneself. Not only does daily meditation offer a variety of physical and emotional health benefits, it is also an extremely useful tool in reconnecting with your self, goals, values, and vision.

The late Bassmi Ibrahim was a major proponent of using meditation as a way to harvest self-inspiration. Upon observing his contemporary abstract pieces, you can feel his soul flowing into the work, with designs exuding a sense of spiritual liberty. Bassmi allowed his meditations to re-energize his passions, and encouraged loved ones to do the same. Our goal is to embody his energy in our movement, because the faith and support of those around us is often what keeps us going. Sometimes that support is what helps us realize that we had "it" in us all along.
Featured Artist Jess Milad honored his birthday last week by sharing their story. Even a small peek into the relationship she had with her uncle has opened our inspirational floodgates and reminded us that the most impactful inspiration comes from within. Our organization is honored to have the opportunity to celebrate someone who has had such an impact, and we want to encourage all of our readers and network to live life in the way that Bassmi did: full of hope, light, love, and positive encouragement, while being in tune with yourself and spirit.

Read her tribute below:
As artists we grow up having people that help us harness our creativity, that have faith in our growth as artists, and who help guide us. I feel that I was lucky enough to have all of that from one man; my uncle Bassmi was my inspiration for becoming the artist I am today.

There was a moment in my life I remember so vividly – I created a piece of art where I was trying to replicate my uncles work and when I showed him he looked at me and told me “you have an eye for creating beauty”. Those words stuck with me, they are the words that guided me through my artistic journey. A few years ago I was going through a rough time and so I went to visit him during one of his gallery showings, it was during this visit where my uncle began to guide me to another pivotal journey, my yoga/spiritual one. He told me how his art came through mediation and that it wasn’t until he found inner happiness did he truly grow as a person and artist.

He was man that brought light and beauty into this world, so much so that when he left his earthly vessel back in November, it wasn’t darkness that I felt, but light. His energy now lives in his art, and his loved ones and I am honored to have had such beautiful mentor and uncle.

I would like to thank the Calling All Creative community for allowing me to pay tribute to my Uncle Bassmi on their platform, and for those of you who took the time to read this, thank you.
🙏🏽
